Don’t just go for the cheapest
You may be constrained to a budget but simply going to a designer based on cost is not wise. Think about why they are the cheapest, do they charge high add-ons costs if you decide you want something minor changed at the last minute, for example. Or, does the cost that they attract you with only cover one part of the exhibit.
You would be amazed at the number of add-ons that can occur if you are not savvy. If staying within budget is absolutely imperative, you need to read the small print and know the extra costs involved.
Flawless stands with that high-impact look you want are not cheap, so you are probably better off paying a higher initial asking price from a more honest designer.
What do their past customers say?
It is worth your while looking at reviews of the design company you are interested in. Or, if you can speak to their past customers, do that. Discover how well the company responded to changes, what their customer service was like, ask about the quality of the final product.
Try and find out if everything went to plan in terms of timescales and the expected service. Also, try and find out how in-demand they are. Are they busy? Do they have a lot of images on their website of stands they have already done? If you do a little investigation, you may discover something important that will either make or break the sale with them.
At the end of the day, an exhibition is your showcase to the world, so you need to ensure it will be exactly as you expect.
Have they been accredited, or are they a member of any relevant organisation?
Any trade company designer will be affiliated to, or a member of an official trade body such as the IEAA (International Association of Exhibitions and Events) or the ESSA (Events Supplier and Services Association).
They will have earned some kind of accreditation too, so look out for these sorts of symbols on their website. When you see these things on there, you know that you are dealing with a professional.
They offer reassurance that you will be getting a good service, and will end up with a high-quality product. When looking for an appropriate company to create your stand, the onus is on you to do the correct and thorough investigation.
